The Real Dutch Spirit: removing art from the streets

Welcome to Amsterdam, city once famous for its free-spirited atmosphere.

Dutch artist Hugo Kaagman sprayedd his piece "Dutch Spirit" some time ago in the Berenstraat (one of the famous "nine streets"), next to Dutch Accent, a store/gallery with art, gifts & souvenirs, where his work is being sold. Kaagman got a letter from the Amsterdam city council, charging him to remove the piece asap, or he would be charged with a penalty fee of 2500 euros. The council judged the work to be too commercial, and it received one complaint, reason enough to give Kaagman the choice: paint it white or pay the price.

Yes, people of Amsterdam, formerly known as the magic centre, this is what has become of us. Morons!
